How to customize SharePoint My Sites search site

One custom request I haven’t ran across to often is to add a custom search center of the My Sites within SharePoint MOSS.

Typically, when you do a search within My Sites it will default back to whatever search center, if any, you set up for the main site. The one thing to keep in mind is that each My Site is it’s own separate site collection. This means that if you create a new search center subsite then point the search settings to that My Site it will only be for that one My Site. Other My Sites will still be pointed back to the default.

If we go to the sp_admin My site and create a new search center as follows:

site actions>create>web pages>sites and workspaces>search center

It will create our new Search center as expected but only for that ‘My Site’ site colleciton. We can  see this by noting the URL of the search center.

The URL shows as: http://my.moss.local/personal/sp_admin/searchcenter/default.aspx

As we can see this specific search center will only be for the sp_admin user and no other ‘my site’ users.

The proper step is to log onto the setting page of the base My Sites site collection by using the URL ‘http://my.moss.local/_layouts/settings.aspx’. From this base My Sites you can then create a new search center as follows:

site actions>create>web pages>sites and workspaces>search center

This will create a new search center with the URL ‘http://my.moss.local/searchCenter/default.aspx’, but the regular My Sites user will still not be linked properly.

The create this link for the My Sites log onto the SSP admin that contains the ‘my sites’. In our case that will be ‘http://ssp.moss.local/ssp/admin/default.aspx’. Go to: Shared Services Administration: PrimarySSP > My Site Settings>Preferred Search Center.

Now when you do a search for ‘test’ within the ‘My Sites’ you will get the URL to look like this:

https://my.moss.local/SearchCenter/Results.aspx?k=test&s=All%20Sites

You can take it a step further by adding in the appropriate bread crumb link portal connection.
